REVIEW:

A screwball comedy dealing with class differences, “You Can’t Take It with You”, directed by Frank Capra, is a heartwarming and humorous film that celebrates the joys of living life to the fullest and following one’s passions. The film’s standout performances come from Lionel Barrymore, James Stewart, and Jean Arthur, who bring depth and charm to their respective roles.  Also, it should be noted that this was the first of many projects by Frank Capra that included Barrymore, Stewart, Arthur and Edward Arnold.

The story beautifully weaves together the lives of the free-spirited Sycamore clan and the more conventional Kirbys, providing plenty of heartwarming and comedic moments along the way.  The scene where Lionel Barrymore tells Jean Arthur that he can’t sell their house because he believes that his late wife’s spirit still resides there is quite touching and believable. The film’s exploration of love, family, and individuality is both endearing and thought-provoking.

It is worth noting that Edward Arnold delivered a commendable performance as Anthony Kirby Sr.  He ultimately kills an all-important business deal because he comes to appreciate that there’s more to life than making money—and that being family.

With Frank Capra’s expert direction, the film captures the essence of embracing life’s simple pleasures and cherishing the moments that truly matter. The performances, coupled with a well-crafted screenplay, make “You Can’t Take It with You” a classic that continues to resonate with audiences today.

Overall, this is a delightful and uplifting film that reminds us of the importance of staying true to ourselves and finding happiness in life’s everyday moments.
